Woodcut, hand-painted, 310x360 mm on 318x400 mm sheet. Taken from 'Cosmographia universalis', the most important German geographical work after the Nuremberg Chronicle of 1493. Sebastian Muenster (1488-1552) is considered one of the most important German humanists and scholars. He was among the first Europeans to understand Middle Eastern languages and cultures and published several works on this subject as well as on theology, geography and chronology. Good copy, with sheet a little browned and slightly trimmed but no damage to the engraving (only on the verso some marginal notes are slightly mutilated).
