Copper engraving, 310x468 mm, hand-painted at the time, from “Civitates Orbis Terrarum”, a milestone in landscape painting, published in different years from 1572 to 1615 ca. in 6 volumes. Beautiful general perspective plan of the city. Georg Braun (1541-1622) was an erudite theologian who made numerous journeys for religious and political purposes, during which he was able to collect vast anthropological and geographical material. Franz Hogenberg (ca. 1540 – ca. 1590) was a skilled Flemish engraver. After collaborating with Ortelius on the “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, banned from the Netherlands, he moved to Cologne, where he continued his activity as an engraver. I had to collaborate for some years, giving birth to their most famous work, the “Civitates Orbis Terrarum”. Good copy with German text relating to the view on the verso, restored tear in the upper margin.
