1.700,00 €
Copper engraving, 420 × 620 mm. A rare view of the square, later copied by Remondini, taken from the finest series of city prints. The subject is by Moro; the engraving is by Pedro, as indicated on the plate: ‘Ulderico Moro d[e]l’ (on the left) and ‘Franco Pedro [inc]’ (on the right). (See Udine piante e vedute, no. 34). A fine copy, though somewhat greyed by age. Trimmed to the edge of the copper plate, with a few stains.
"The best-known work from his time in Udine was the creation of four engravings depicting views of the city’s most significant sites (Piazza Contarena, the Archbishop’s Palace, the loggia of the Public Palace, and Piazza Mercatonuovo), which kept Moro occupied from 1769 to 1771. An initial version of the view of Piazza Contarena, featuring the small figures crowding the scene drawn by the Venetian painter Giuseppe de Gobbis, did not please the patrons at all; consequently, the copper plate was destroyed and a new proof had to be made, this time entrusting the ‘figures’ to the painter Francesco Fedeli, known as il Maggiotto. Maggiotto entrusted the task of engraving the plates to Francesco Del Pedro, whilst he himself produced the preparatory drawings. The project, immediately beset by numerous difficulties, ultimately proved to be a financial failure; nevertheless, the views created by M. constituted an indispensable reference point for the production of subsequent prints, which reworked or simply copied these perspectives."
