Lithograph, 290 × 200 mm on a sheet measuring 430 × 290 mm; bottom left: “Chapuy lith./A Paris pubblié par A. Hauser, 11 Boulevard des Italiens”; bottom right: “A. Guesdon / Imp. Lemercier, Benard et C”. A beautiful view of Asti Cathedral, enlivened by figures in the foreground; on the left, on a stone, is the monogram of the lithographer A. G. The cathedral underwent stylistic improvements over the centuries; our perspective view highlights the beauty of the 15th-century Pelletta portal with the statue of the Assumption of Mary flanked by nine angels, and the Romanesque bell tower (restored in the 19th century) which houses nine bells. Taken from a substantial collection of views entitled “Le Moyen Monumental et Archéologique”, executed from his own drawing by Chapuy and lithographed by A. Guesdon. A fine copy. Dry-stamped publisher’s mark at the bottom beneath the title. Chapuy, an architect in the French Corps of Engineers, was forced to seek a new career after 1815 due to his Bonapartism. Thanks to his graphic and artistic skills, he devoted himself to illustrating landscapes and monuments, working on commission first for publishers linked to the field of archaeology, and after 1823 on publications for travel books.
