Copper engraving, mm 165x235, from “Civitates Orbis Terrarum,” a milestone of vedutism, published in different years from 1572 to 1615 ca. in 6 volumes. Beautiful view of the Sardinian city. Georg Braun (1541-1622) was a learned theologian who made numerous journeys for religious and political purposes in which he was able to collect extensive anthropological and geographical material. Franz Hogenberg (c. 1540-c. 1590) was a skilled Flemish engraver. After collaborating with Ortelius on the “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum,” which was banned in the Netherlands, he moved to Cologne, where he continued his work as an engraver. The two collaborated for some years giving birth to their most famous work, the “Civitates Orbis Terrarum.” Very good copy with Latin text relating to the view on verso, usual short margins.
