Woodcut, 250×500 mm (sheet 435×600 mm). Sheet LXXXVII. Latin text. Hand-coloured, it depicts Florence in a large woodcut that represents one of the very earliest views of the city. On the reverse of the same sheet there are 14 vignettes depicting kings of the Roman period and consuls. Taken from the ‘Liber Chronicarum’, commonly known as the ‘Nuremberg Chronicle’: it was the first work to feature actual depictions of cities around the world and was so hugely successful that it is considered a milestone in the development of geographical knowledge. It was printed in two editions: the first, in Latin, in July 1493 with a print run of around 1,500 copies; the second, in German, in December of the same year, with a print run of around 800 copies. The engravings are the work of Michael Wohlgemuth, master of Albrecht Dürer, his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, and the young Dürer himself. A fine copy with pleasant colouring, with some defects at the central fold. Some handwritten notes at the bottom and in the top right-hand corner.
