Copper engraving, 186x490 mm, hand-painted at the time, taken from “Civitates Orbis Terrarum”, a milestone in landscape painting, published in different years from 1572 to 1615 ca. in 6 volumes. Beautiful general perspective view of the city. Georg Braun (1541-1622) was an erudite theologian who undertook numerous journeys for religious and political purposes, during which he was able to collect vast anthropological and geographical material. Franz Hogenberg (ca. 1540 – ca. 1590) was a skilled Flemish engraver. After collaborating with Ortelius on the “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, banned in the Netherlands, he moved to Cologne, where he continued his activity as an engraver. The two collaborated for several years, giving birth to their most famous work, the “Civitates Orbis Terrarum”. Excellent copy with German text relating to the view on the back, small restored tear on the upper margin.
