Cod 0827
1.500,00 €
Two volumes in 8° (195x145 mm); 6 unnumbered pages, 685 pages, 1 blank page, 32 pages of register; 751 pages, 1 blank page, 28 pages of register, 1 blank page; title pages with engraved vignette and motto ‘Fortuna forti sublevanda industria’; initial letters illustrated within vignettes, woodcut friezes, printed marginal notes. Eighteenth-century parchment, red sprayed edges, gold title on hazelnut leather blocks, renewed. Handwritten note of ownership on the frontispieces. Note presenting the work by the publisher Girolamo Discepolo; he, a great printer, known for various publishing successes, was beloved by Veronese intellectuals and clergy and in 1590 produced an exceptional catalogue of twenty-five titles. With his company, he resisted for several years the hypothetical isolation of the general crisis in printing at the end of the century: Verona continued to send books to the Frankfurt fair, mainly thanks to Discepolo. The new Istoria di Verona by G. Della Corte, our edition from 1992-94, was so in demand that it was reprinted as early as 1996. There was no shortage of other titles on scholarship and secular and sacred history, or rhymes, or devotional manuals. First edition of one of the fundamental historiographies of the city of Verona, later republished in 1596. The work was planned to consist of 22 books, but only the first 20 were printed due to the death of Dalla Corte. Very fine copy. Segantini bookplate. Slight traces of surface dirt and slight marginal stains on the corners of some pages. Notes crossed out in ink on p. 316. Lozzi, 6271; Platner p. 426.
